RYA Training Centre logoWe’re a recognised RYA Training Centre based at James Watt Dock Marina in Greenock and operating in the tidal waters of the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. We deliver accredited RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Sail Cruising practical courses.

Looking for a structured practical RYA course to teach you some sailing basics? Seeking confidence and qualifications to let you charter and skipper a yacht yourself? Or aiming to achieve the RYA Yachtmaster™ certificate of competence? Look no further! Rival Sailing prices are all-inclusive with no hidden costs – you get 4 evening meals aboard the boat on 5-day courses, all breakfasts and lunches, tea/coffee & snacks throughout PLUS all fuel and berthing fees. A meal on the evening of arrival can be arranged at your own cost.

RYA Sail Cruising Courses (price per person)Peak Off-peak
Start Yachting
2 days. For beginners, all ages.
Have fun while experiencing sail handling, rope work and steering a yacht, and gain an awareness of safety on board. Courses are approximately 16 hours and can also be run over a series of sessions.
Competent Crew
5 days. For beginners, all ages.
Designed to teach you the ropes, get to know the boat and become an active crew member. Learn to steer, handle sails, keep watch, row a dinghy and assist in daily on board duties. Courses can also be run over two weekends (2+3 days). Holders of the Start Yachting certificate can complete the Competent Crew course in a reduced time of 3 days.
Day Skipper
5 days. For people with some previous yachting experience, basic navigation and sailing skills, 16 years and over.
Learn to skipper a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and encouragement and to ensure your safety. Courses can also be run over two weekends (2+3 days).
Coastal Skipper
5 days. For people of Day Skipper standard, ages 17 years and over. Advanced skippering techniques consisting of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.
Extended RYA course
7 days. Competent Crew, Day Skipper, Coastal Skipper

We can also deliver RYA Yachtmaster™ preparation. The RYA Yachtmaster™ Certificate of Competence is a well known, highly respected qualification worldwide, proving your experience and competence as a skipper. Unlike other courses in the cruising programme, there is no formal training to complete in order to become a Yachtmaster™. If you have sufficient experience and sea time, you can put yourself forward for an exam to test your skills and knowledge.

We welcome constructive feedback on our post-course evaluation forms. If you still feel the issue has not been resolved to your satisfaction we will then refer you to the RYA.
