Rival Sailing is run single-handedly by Sam Paterson, RYA Yachtmaster Instructor for Sail with commercial endorsement, and co-owner of yacht East End Endeavour, moored at Rhu Marina in the Firth of Clyde.
Rival 41C yacht East End Endeavour is renowned as a safe and successful sail training boat. Admittedly less glamorous than some yachts, EEE still has style! Well-equipped and handling well in all weathers, this boat has won the respect and affection of the thousands who have sailed on her since being launched in the River Clyde in 1982. Sam himself first sailed on EEE aged 15 and is now dedicated to providing rewarding sailing opportunities to beginners and enthusiasts alike.
Boat specification: EEE is a 41′ (12.5m) long-keeled Bermudan-rigged sloop with central cockpit, designed by Peter Brett. Fitted out as a sail training vessel in the late 1970s, the manual set-up of roller reefing foresail and slab reefing mainsail is still in use for training purposes.
Living on board: Below decks, EEE has a functional galley (kitchen) area with gas oven/hobs and fridge. The saloon has a dining table seating eight people, and locker space for stowing provisions, maintenance gear and personal belongings. The chart table area is well equipped with nautical charts, electronic navigation tools including radar, reference books and learning resources and radio/CD/mp3 player. An effective heating system is in place to combat the chillier aspects of our infamously changeable Scottish weather!
Accommodation: EEE can accommodate up to ten people (including skipper and mate) on day sails. For overnight courses/cruises, this is usually limited to six people, though eight can be accommodated on short trips. There is a small forward cabin with two single berths, a single quarter berth, and the saloon converts into up to six narrow berths with lee cloths, though we prefer to use a maximum of four. There is also a two-berth aft (rear) cabin, usually reserved for skipper and mate. PLEASE NOTE: we don’t currently provide bedding so remember to bring your sleeping bag and perhaps a pillow for extra comfort – think of your sailing experience as camping or youth hostelling on water!
Toilets/showering: The boat is equipped with forward and aft heads (toilets). There is a basic shower in the forward heads but we tend to make good use of on-shore marina toilet and shower facilities during short stays or overnight visits throughout our courses and cruises.
Safety equipment: EEE was built for safety and is fully equipped with life jackets, safety equipment, life raft, and tender with oars and outboard motor. All comply with the MCA (Maritime & Coastguard Agency) Code of Practice for the Safety of Small Commercial Sailing Vessels. As a certified sail training vessel, the yacht, equipment and operating procedures are all subject to stringent annual inspections by the MCA and RYA (Royal Yachting Association).
Insurance: East End Endeavour and any other vessels used by Rival Sailing are fully insured against accidents and third party liability.
