Rhu is around 25 miles from Glasgow city centre, with good road and rail links. Trains run frequently from Glasgow Queen Street and Edinburgh Waverley to the nearby town of Helensburgh. Day sail and short cruise destinations in the Firth of Clyde include the Victorian seaside resorts of Millport on Greater Cumbrae, Largs, Ardrossan and Rothesay, the Kyles of Bute, Isle of Arran and destinations on Loch Fyne, including Tarbert, Portavadie and Otter Ferry. Closer to Rhu, near the Tail o’ the Bank and the mouth of the River Clyde, are the Holy Loch, Loch Long and Loch Goil.
Mile-builders and holiday cruises provide ample opportunity to explore Scotland’s north-west coast via the Mull of Kintyre or Crinan Canal. Mainland destinations include Campbeltown, Ardfern and Oban. The Inner Hebrides comprise a diverse range of islands. These include Gigha, Jura, Islay, Skye, Mull, Iona, Staffa and the Small Isles (Eigg, Muck, Canna and Rum). Destinations in Northern Ireland include Belfast, Bangor and Ballycastle or Rathlin Island just off the Antrim Coast.
Longer mile-builders often include a passage further north to Arisaig, Mallaig and enticingly remote places like Loch Nevis in Knoydart. Sailing west to the Outer Hebrides, you might reach Barra, North and South Uist, Harris and Lewis – or even Scotland’s most westerly point, St Kilda. Alternatively, you might visit one of Scotland’s neighbours. Sailing south could take you to Dublin, Liverpool or the Isle of Man.
